En quelques années, les DJ et producteurs Diplo (Wesley Pentz) et Switch (Dave Taylor) sont devenus des figures incontournables d’un rap aventureux et riche d’influences, à l’image de leurs productions pour M.I.A. ou sur le premier album de Santigold. L’un est américain, l’autre anglais. Ensemble, ils créent le concept de Major Lazer et enregistre quantité de titres dans les studios Tuff Gong de Kingston (Jamaïque), berceau du reggae. A l’instar de Gorillaz, Major Lazer est un personnage de film d’animation dont l’histoire raconte qu’il a laissé un bras lors d’une guerre entre zombies en 1984.

Le disque est lui bien plus intéressant. Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do, sorti à l’été 2009, est traversé par les rythmes trépidants du dancehall mis sous pression electro et rap. Le premier hit « Hold the Line » est partagé avec Mr. Lexx et Santigold tandis que le suivant « Zumbie » (non repris dans l’album) invite le comédien Andy Milionakis et que « Pon de Floor » est chanté par Vybz Kartel avant d’être samplé par Beyoncé sur « Run the World (Girls) » (produit par Diplo). Amanda Blank est également au générique (« What U Like »), avec des pointures du dancehall (Busy Signal, Mr. Vegas, Turbulence).

Loin de s’en tenir à ce premier coup d’essai, le projet Major Lazer se poursuit de belle manière avec la sortie du tube « Get Free » chanté par Amber Coffman (Dirty Projectors). En 2012, le duo d’activistes s’attelle à la production de l’album reggae de Snoop Dogg devenu Snoop Lion, Reincarnated, dont la sortie coïncide avec le deuxième effort de Major Lazer. Dévoilé en avril, Free the Universe comprend le titre « Jessica » interprété par Ezra Koenig du groupe Vampire Weekend et les participations de Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel, Shaggy, Wyclef Jean, Santigold, Peaches et Bruno Mars.

Mazor Lazer revient sur le devant de la scène en 2015 avec le tube « Lean On » produit avec DJ Snake et chanté par la Danoise MØ.
L’album Peace Is the Mission sort en juin avec au programme un mélange de dancehall, electro, moombathon et rap dance. Parmi les nombreux invités, 2 Chainz, Pusha T et Mad Cobra ne sont pas les plus discrets.
